Gila Burial

2019

Turkey Creek Trailhead, Gila Wilderness, New Mexico

  • performance

This durational performance focused on the notion of interspecies relations through the act of weaving together yucca and other nearby species. Call wove the yucca base and then walked along the river, adding to her “dress”. The intended primary audience for this work was the more-than-human who reside in the Gila Wilderness.

The work was an exploration in perception as participation, engaging in an active interplay between the perceiving body and that which was being perceived. At the end of the performance Call dismantled the piece, returning it to the land.

This piece was created while in residence at the Land Arts of the American West.
